This wall hanging is a remarkable blend of craftsmanship and tradition. The intricate Rogan painting is created using paint made by boiling castor oil for hours, producing a rich, thick texture with vivid natural colors that bind seamlessly to the fabric. Each design is drawn freehand with meticulous detail, using a wooden stylus to guide delicate, thread-like strands of paint onto the cloth. The half-and-half design technique results in a stunning mirror image effect when the fabric is folded, adding a sense of balance and harmony to the piece. Elegant and timeless, this artwork is perfect for those who appreciate the beauty and heritage of traditional Indian textiles.

About Rogan art.

In 2008, documentary evidence brought to light significant findings about ancient oil painting techniques. During research conducted in Bamiyan, Japanese scientist Yoko Taniguchi and UNESCO discovered an entire town of Buddhist followers. Remarkably, the site contained exquisite paintings that appeared as if they had been created in a modern studio. These artworks were found on walls, wooden doors, and textiles, all executed using oil-based paints.

Dating back to the 6th century, these paintings are considered the oldest known oil paintings. The research report revealed the materials used in their creation, identifying a mixture of linseed oil, chalk, and natural pigments as key components. Additionally, linseed oil, walnut oil, castor oil, and poppyseed oil were used as substitutes.

During the era of the Silk Road, Indian artisans played a vital role in the global handicraft trade, exporting their works to Europe, China, and Japan. In Gujarat, Rogan painting was historically practiced by Hindu artisans. However, with the rise of machine printing, this intricate art form nearly vanished. Approximately 60 to 70 years ago, Rogan painting was widespread across Gujarat, used to create traditional chaniyas and sarees, which were worn by Hindu brides. Even today, these garments are still cherished in many villages. The Bharwad, Rabari, Ahir, Patel, and other communities traditionally wore Rogan-painted chaniyas.

Rogan art has existed since the time of Buddhist followers and was once practiced by artisans in Rajasthan as well. Today, this rare and historic art form is preserved by a single Hindu family—Ashish Kansara from Madhapar—who remains dedicated to keeping this centuries-old tradition alive.
