About Meghwar embroidery
The 'Harijan,' meaning "people of God" ('Hari' means God and 'Jan' means people), was given to the Meghwal community by Mahatma Gandhi. Originally hailing from Marwar in Rajasthan, the Meghwals are skilled artisans known for their expertise in weaving wool and cotton, as well as crafting intricate leatherwork and wood carvings. Spread across Kutch, they live in close-knit communities. Their homes are kept meticulously clean and are often adorned with traditional cow dung mud and mirror decorations. While Meghwal men specialize in leatherwork and wood carving, the women excel in embroidery and patchwork (appliqué).
This Kutch work blouse (tunic, choli) is a timeless piece, preserving the essence of traditional Kutch artistry. Its rich history and craftsmanship make it a cherished addition to any ethnic wardrobe.
